CONCEPT

The Rice Experience

The Rice Experience is a sensory journey by perfumer Daniel Pescio, inspired by his 2019 art residency at Villa Kujoyama in Kyoto. During a visit to Aso, Kumamoto, he encountered the rare Milky Queen rice, which sparked his exploration of the aromas, textures, and emotions that rice evokes. Captivated by this essential element of Japanese life, he embarked on a journey to explore its cultural significance. From sun-dried rice stalks reminiscent of the citrusy Petitgrain Bigarade to the soft, cloud-like texture of rice expressed through notes like sandalwood, rose molecules, hay, and jasmine molecules, Pescio translates the essence of rice into fragrance. To balance these airy notes, he grounds his composition with earthy elements—iris, vetiver, angelica, and carrot roots—echoing the richness of the soil that nurtures rice. His exploration naturally extended to sake, a symbol of Japanese heritage. Partnering with Gekkeikan, one of Japan’s oldest sake breweries, he created a distinctive Sake Perfume, blending tradition with olfactory artistry.

Daniel Pescio

Perfumer
Daniel Pescio, a Brazilian-born independent perfumer and olfactory artist, has lived and worked in France for over 30 years, collaborating in cities such as Paris, Avignon, Marseille, and Lyon, as well as in Japan, Hungary, and Brazil. A graduate of the renowned Institut Supérieur International du Parfum (ISIPCA) in Versailles, he has contributed to prestigious brands, including Chanel, Dior, Tom Ford, Prada, Hermès, and Serge Lutens. In 2010, Pescio joined Éditions de Parfums Frédéric Malle as a retail and training manager, supporting the brand’s growth. The following year, he founded his own company, focusing on fragrance creation and sensory education, including teaching children through synesthetic experiences. As a perfume expert, he gives lectures and conducts training sessions worldwide. His deep connection with Japanese culture began in 2018 after completing Kōdō (the Japanese incense ceremony) training at the Shino-ryū School in Nagoya. His Kōdō-inspired project earned him an art residency at Villa Kujoyama in Kyoto, where he began exhibiting his work in Japan and France. Pescio’s creations explore synesthesia and the ephemeral nature of scents, weaving together fragrance, emotion, and intuition. He draws inspiration from Japanese traditions such as Zen, tea ceremony, sake, tatami, and cuisine, seeing scent as a reflection of landscapes and vibrations that evoke profound meanings beyond the tangible.
