CONCEPT
wacca member and artist/incense maker Mia Reiko Braverman returns to Japan for another special workshop.
Following the warm response to last year’s session held on August 28, 2025, this workshop will once again invite participants into the world of handmade incense.
Through the tactile process of shaping incense by hand and experiencing its rich aromas, participants will learn incense making from Mia’s unique perspective — one shaped by both Japanese tradition and multicultural life in the United States.
Using natural materials, including rare Hawaiian sandalwood, the workshop offers an opportunity to explore themes of compassion, ancestry, and connection to place through scent. Over the course of this one-hour experience, participants will share in a meaningful exchange of culture through the art of incense.

Mia Reiko Braverman
Mia Reiko Braverman is an artist and incense maker based in Portland, Oregon, USA. A first-generation Japanese American raised in Kauai, Hawaii, she draws deep inspiration from her cultural roots, blending tradition with artistic exploration. She is the creator of Fumi, a project named after her grandmother, devoted to honoring ancestral connection, the craft of being home, and the sensory power of the arts. Through Fumi, Mia offers handmade incense, curated found objects, and works by fellow artists. Fumi also serves as a gathering place, hosting workshops and performances guided by an ethos of radical hospitality.
